Not all historical buildings in Yarm are recognised with a plaque. The Yarm Heritage Trail is designed to be more than a list of stops. Along the route, there are architectural details, local businesses and scenic viewpoints that add to the experience. This page highlights extra features you may notice while walking between stops.

Found next to the second stop is an iconic shop, Treats, a sweet shop which is filled with a mix of old, classic sweets and modern desserts including ice cream and waffles. Take a stop, look inside and grab some sweets before moving on to the next few stops. If you catch a good day, enjoy a traditional sundae on your scenic walk through the high street, or a classic hot chocolate if you catch the chill off the river.
Treats, Yarm
If you look closely at shop fronts, doorways and stonework on the buildings as you walk through the high street you will notice evidence of earlier uses and centuries of change.
Yarm developed as a busy market town and coaching stop. Many of the buildings along the heritage route showcase the town’s long history of travel, hospitality and social life.

The River Tees is one of the most recognisable parts of the trail. Take time to pause along the riverside path on the benches and consider how the landscape shaped settlement and growth.
From Yarm Bridge to the curve of the High Street, the trail offers great viewpoints for photography. Look for details like cobbles, signs and reflections on the river once you end the trail.
